Honesty and Innocence

Truth, the great enigma.
Holding firm while tearing you apart.
Beating painfully within your heart.
Why is it that you cannot love again?
(Honesty and innocence - oh, wasn't
there a time you lived that way...?)

Life become a series of rote pain.
Repressing thought and feeling for
a gain of something less than satisfying.
Joy become a word left undefined.
(Honesty and innocence - oh, wasn't
there a time you lived that way...?)

Flashbacks of another time, as if
a movie played within your mind.
Back to the days when love was
yours and mine. They are no more.
(Honesty and innocence - oh, wasn't
there a time you lived that way...?)

You gave it all away, as you gave in
to their demands. You made a stand,
before the blind retreat. Nothing feels
quite real, the way it never did before.
Life shuffles out the door and fades away.
(Honesty and innocence - oh, wasn't
there a time you lived that way...?)

Time is passing. Age is growing.
Once you swore you'd find another way.
Now all those days of youth have
drained away. And all that's left is
nothing more than any yesterday.
(Honesty and innocence - oh, wasn't
there a time you lived that way...?)

You move, but it is all the same. You
have become too tamed by all the useless
rules that keep your soul at bay. Now and
then, a sunbeam finds its way into your eye.
You look into the sky and wonder why.
(Honesty and innocence - oh, wasn't
there a time you lived that way...?)

Love came alive, more real than all
the stars that fly above the endless sea.
How could you ever turn your back
on that? The blessing of eternal grace,
dispersed upon the winds of lonely space.
(Honesty and innocence - oh, wasn't
there a time you lived that way...?)

And now the world seems bleak and chill.
No matter what you want or will.
For honesty and innocence have fled.
They cannot live the lies that you have told.
Emptiness and bitterness, these are
your choice, your one success.
Oh, honesty and innocence, please
come to play upon this stage again...
