Tomorrow Never Came

"Tomorrow," he said, "I will straighten it out.
I need just a little more time - to get it all
together here just right. Let me explain,"
and then there came a pause on the line,
while the distance remained between them.

She held her silence, willing him to finally
tell her true, the why and what of all he'd
come to do, but all that came to her was
a silence unaltered, a clearing of throat,
and he faltered yet again. "I've got to run,
but I promise I'll call and explain it all -
tomorrow."

And the silence rang through days and
nights of her survival; yet she no longer
was surprised, for all his alibis had been
that way. Less and less, the tears she
spent, as clarity began to replace
all the many memories - once blurred
by hope that never found fulfillment
of its need. And all the dreams that
they once dreamt together came to
fade away to nothingness.

"Tomorrow," he'd said,
"I'll get back to our love" -
but tomorrow never came...
