Beyond the Shadow

She got a letter in the mail.
Crisp and very clear, the print.
Therein, as if in innocence,
an unknown hand became
the still and silent voice
of death itself.

Whispering the truth into
the inner space she'd held so dear,
waiting for her lover to return.

There were walls and windows weeping
in the great unspoken keeping
of the secrets that
they never dared to tell.

Whispering the truth into
the inner space she'd held so dear,
waiting for her lover to return.

The children came and then just disappeared.
It was never really clear again - that time
and space where everything kept
happening again. And no matter how
she tried to close and lock the apertures,
the aliens intruded anyway.

Whispering the truth into
the inner space she'd held so dear,
waiting for her lover to return.

Until the whispers in the dark
became the spark
that led her home
into the truth.

She got a letter in the mail.
Crisp and very clear, the print.
Therein, as if in innocence,
an unknown hand became
the still and silent voice
of death itself.

"Twas then she knew,
beyond the shadow of a doubt
that the man she loved
would never come again...
