Death Lingers

Death lingers in the atmosphere.
They hide within their skin.
Invisible, the flames are burning near.
They cling to things that once
were dear to them.

Synapses collapsing, as the meaning
loses ground. They lost beliefs that
never could be found. The safety,
the security - illusive at their best.
The dreams of home and family
that always failed the test.

Their focus roamed upon the edge
of bright, abysmal depth. Sky sighing
as it disappeared from view.
They claimed it never changed
but their denial was too strange
to last for long.

Sounds and snips of old love songs
were playing in their heads.
Memories that took the dread away.
Feelings of abandoned youth
were rising to a fore of nothingness.
Unknown, the future faded into mist.

Old adventures limping in the loneliness.
Searching for another feel of bliss.
Child-like, they hungered for
the taste of something more.
The cancer spread. The spell of dread
that used to mark their souls,
was fading into visions of the whole.

Death lingers in the atmosphere.
They hide within their skin.
Invisible, the flames are burning near.
Life goes on. The well dries up.
They sup upon their memories again...
