It Didn't Have To Be This Way

No end to the rain
Descending in pain
Memories waken
The toll has been taken
The grief begins again
Extending back and forth between
The is and might have been

Arial photography
Intense, the numinosity
Blasts of light that rise into the fall
Prosperity that spends itself
Within a great destructive attitude
Projecting all those heavy moods
Into the atmosphere
Death conquering the force of life
That calls us to remember love again

The presence of technology
The essence of the spending spree
Utterly precise, the murders spawned
Another great computer game
Flick the switch and watch the flames
Engulf another image on the screen
Commentaries blossoming
In privacy that never seems quite real

Commandeer the oil fields, oh yes
Proclaim the human nature of your quest
Pray to the idol of your god and guess
What fate remains for all that have been blessed
By the hypocrisy of war.
Nightmare screams and dizzy dreams
Of horror laced with shame
Feelings of indignity relived time and again
Within a strain of hopeless emptiness

It didn't have to be this way, you know
It didn't have to be this way at all...
