Lay in State

Quiet and unmoving,
the cadaver lay in state.
Empty eyes absorbed the sight
as if a carcass lay within the road.
Backing off, the party took
a droll, insipid turn.

The fires of hell were burning
deep inside their empty minds.
Tortured peals of laughter
that rekindled the divine.
Ethical behavior based on pure biology.
They never came to know
the greater power of the soul.
Invisibly infected by the theme
of their mortality.

Quiet and unmoving,
the cadaver lay in state.
Images were battling
to keep the life away.
Imagination buried in the grave.
Silence dwelled within the grove.
Its sacred trees no more than memory...
