No Surprise

It comes as no surprise and yet
it startles something vital, deep inside.
Remembering how wide and deep
the river grew that spring.
Pondering results of too much rain.
Like counting out left-over tears
that no one ever dared to cry.
The sorrow never seems to die.
It isn't tame. The mind of man
drifts in and out of sane.
Burgeoning in images of sin.
Walls hidden by the boxes that
they keep their secrets in.
Go deeper still. Into the soul.
It's washing out the walls you built so well.
Insistently consistent as it batters at your will.
We wonder and we worry.
Thinking we might never feel that strength again.
It comes as no surprise and yet
it startles something vital, deep inside.
As another rush makes everything seem blurry.
We're battered down. The peace unfound.
Until the soul extinguishes it all...
