Patterns of Persuasion

Patterns of persuasion.
Lies to the extreme.
Reaching out and smothering
the essence of the dream.

Hyper-tense suspicion.
Tremors full of fear.
Looking o'er his shoulder
for the devil to appear.

Sleepless nights.
Strange appetites.
Waking with a start although
he'd left on all the lights.

Juggling the numbers.
Blaming his new wife.
Leaking through the boundaries
of what used to be his life.

Making deals.
It's all surreal.
No heart, no soul.
No great appeal.

Suddenly, the sodden skies break open.
Weeping in a wail of agony.
The thunder screams
of every dream gone wrong.
He never felt as if he could belong.

In learned patterns of persuasion.
Become lies to the extreme.
Reaching out and smothering
the essence of the dream....
