to ease a troubled heart

The strangest of nights
that night before my father's death
awakening to such intense pain
it seemed it was I that would die

The strangest release
when at last you let go
yet still an underlying ache remained
unresolved, like all your many pains

The strangest of days
when at last they lay you down to rest
and there, amid the friends and relatives
the pain returned in torment to relate

The strangest truth
that I, in mortal guise, had ever known
that pain can be a giant stepping stone
when at last the pain released is finally gone
