An Open Hearth

Fire's flames
they seem to lick enticingly
as they gain their nourishment
from the very wood
that they consume

yet in its consummation
another dance of life begins
as streams of light
so naturally
begin to blend with air

reaching, ever reaching upward
seeking to transform
dull brown of deadwood
into multi-colored forms
of living, moving energy
that seem to breathe
the very air we need
for sustenance

and so the cycles spin
from death to life
and back again
transcending every ending
ascending and descending
as energy becomes
another source of life
in its transition

Mysterious, the way
a simple fire can display
the underlying wisdom
of it all . . .
