Must love contain pain?
Must loss be part of every gain?
Uncertain of her certitude, she thought
that love must be the opposite that's sought

for pain arises of lack of expression
emotions held back, when the feel of depression
clouds the mind and senses to
the flow of love so true

Pain can arise of the purest devotion
as we seek hide inside emotion
yet unexpressed, it festers, grows
until without our will, it flows

unchecked and uncontrolled
into our brightest, burning goals
tarnishing our soul's reflection
injury born by rejection

yet pain and sorrow, even fear
when shared with one held dear
are freed into the mighty stream
of the love in which we dream

When two hearts give and thus receive
a trust beyond what we believe
transcends all other feelings
as love sets senses reeling

to touch and be touched with such care
by responsiveness of hearts that dare
to follow love through calm and storm
to find the brightest rainbow's born
in them
