Eve of Confusion

I awake before the dawn
confused impressions pouring in
Where do I fit within
this mass confusion?

It's Christmas Eve
yet chaos reigns
as people rush around
trying to impress
as less and less
can love be felt to flow

and where once a glow
of peace and happiness
would permeate the atmosphere
now people strive to buy
what must be free

and I wonder how eternity
allows this mass avowal
of grandiose and loveless poverty
or how the earth, so wild and free
accepts her children's cloistered ways

as gathering together
still they stay
so far apart

and sorrow plays
around peripheries
of souls enclosed
that long to be
set free
