High Paradox

We loved so deep, so high
up in those Colorado skies
but somehow never came to find
a way to make the love last
in between

Slow, but sure, the aspens grew
into a towering glade enjoined
just like a loving family
in ties that are invisible to mortal eyes
yet seem to flourish underground

until those blades of steel
all at a man's command
dug deep into the earth
and will and power thus divided
became no more
than just another weapon

destroying all the many dreams
that within a natural symmetry
once might have become real . . .
