Inward Bound

It was hard for him to speak
of matters of the heart
Sometimes it seemed
it was simply hard for him to speak at all

for he was always inward-bound
afraid to show the world who he was
in fear of the rejection that might come

so he sought to perform a great, mysterious feat
to prove to the world for all time
the depth and quality of worth
he found within

yet never could he quite achieve
this one desired end
for never did he quite believe
he mattered

and so it was that life went on without him
as he spent his hours lost in reverie
of a time before time
when the rhythm and the rhyme

brought safety to him in the womb
with a love that ended all too soon
for life . . .
