The Stone Circle

A walkway of grass newly mown
leads the way to a circle of stone
to the right, the grapevines climb and cling
to the left, the trees where sparrows sing

and walking on
we come upon

the stump of a huge, old tree
cut in the shape of a chair to be
a resting place where one might see
nature's beauty, ever so free

free of the hustle and hassle and worry
free of the endless need to hurry
'Twas after a storm, when the air is so clear
it sparkles and dances and sings far and near

with a cool breeze blowing away every care
and the sun drifting lazily, as if aware
of the willow swaying gracefully
in its dance of sweet simplicity

and if you just open your hand, you will see
you are touching the sky's eternity
then onward to the circle set on sacred ground
with the four directions laid straight in the ground

and a fire pit centered to focus the eye
I perch on the stone wall and fly
