The Trees and I

The clouds drift by quickly
and let the sun peak through here and there
as if the sky
cannot decide
just what it wants to do today

Mist hangs over the tops of the trees
a study in the mysteries
of nature's movements

The leaves wait expectantly
for a breeze to come and play
for they know now that their days
of summer fun are numbered

and soon it will be time again for sleep
I wonder if they dream
through long, cold winter days and nights
of the joy of their bright summer days

then I must wonder, too
is part of this sadness that I feel
their way of letting go...?

It seems today we sit and wait
wondering what fate
still has in store

the trees and I
and endless skies
of gray...
