To Warm the Night

It's a gray and gloomy overcast day
that moves once more
toward skies that only seem
to darken more

yet love abides inside
even as this autumn
starts to settle in
within a chill humidity

and Northern winds begin to blow
at first in gentle tenderness
easing these Midwestern planes
into the ice of Northern climbs

as trees begin to turn
readying themselves
for brightly colored
gold and crimson
dancing in the wind

for the magic
of true love descends
to warm the many
days and nights
of our remembering . . .
