Unscathed

He came to me
with flowery words
and dreams of new tomorrows
Promises of love
flowed from his lips
but in the end
each promise made
was broken

One by one
as days went on
he killed the dreams
of our beginning
and when all is said and done
he destroyed the love
we shared

As his parting gift
he tried to leave behind
the gruesome pain
that he alone had earned
but instead he's left
with all the loneliness
that he deserves

for I reclaim myself
this day, this hour
as all I am returns to me
beyond reach of all his cruelty
unscathed by his insanity
and time

yet there is one
new lesson learned
from even this
It's never wise
to love someone
who only loves himself . . .
