Without You

The sun rose golden in the sky today
The world lies frigid under pale blue skies
I watch the leafless limbs of trees
sway in the cold north wind

and still I am without you

Tears fall
enough, it seems, to fill the world with moisture
but the air remains as dry as ice

The sun glistens on snow-covered peaks
but nothing moves
and while the light is bright
it illumines only the emptiness within

Families gather, but you and I
we stand alone
and settle for a distant touch of mind on mind
and fleeting thoughts of love that ought to be

while the world of time and man and space
conspires to keep us apart
